Sint-Katelijne-Waver, 8 november 2011 - Gisterenavond is de loting van de NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters bekend gemaakt. De Belgische Annick Sevenans speelt vandaag om 17 uur tegen de Nederlandse Aniek Van Koot. De verdeling van de andere spelers staat onderaan dit bericht.
De NEC WCT Masters zijn het jaarlijkse sluitstuk van de NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour. Alleen de acht beste mannen en vrouwen en de vier beste quad spelers (divisie voor spelers met een zwaardere handicap) worden uitgenodigd. Het is de eerste keer dat het tornooi in ons land plaatsvindt. Ook in 2012 en 2013 zal het tornooi in België gespeeld worden. Het evenement loopt al van 1994 en heeft als hoofddoel de topspelers in de schijnwerpers te stellen en het bredere publiek kennis te laten maken met deze boeiende sport.
Prestigieus tornooi
Rolstoeltennis volgt dezelfde regels als het normale tennis, met als belangrijkste verschil dat de bal tweemaal mag stuiteren. Een rolstoeltennisser moet een permanente mobiliteitsgerelateerde fysieke aandoening hebben die resulteert in een substantieel functieverlies van één of beide onderste ledematen.
De sport onstond in 1977 in Amerika en werd al snel populair in grote delen van de wereld. In 1992 creëerde de Internationale Tennis Federatie (ITF) een tour voor de spelers, waar vanaf 1994 het wereldkampioenschap -de NEC WCT Masters- werd aan toegevoegd. Dit werd al snel het meest prestigieuze onderdeel van de tour, die dit jaar alleen al 167 tornooien in 46 landen omvatte.
